Description
Add On-Demand 4×4 Capability to Your Electric Golf Cart
The SilverWolf Discovery 4-Wheel Drive Electric Motor Kit transforms a properly equipped electric golf cart into a far more capable machine for hills, loose terrain, rural property, hunting land, campgrounds, farms, and off-road recreation.
Instead of replacing the original rear drivetrain, Discovery adds two independent electric motors at the front wheels. These compact direct-drive motors supply additional front-wheel torque when the system is engaged, working alongside the cartโs existing rear drive system.
The driver controls the system with a three-position dash switch:
- 4L for maximum low-speed torque
- OFF for conventional rear-wheel-drive operation
- 4H for smoother assistance across a broader low-speed range
Both 4L and 4H work while traveling forward or in reverse. The system can also be engaged or disengaged on the fly without stopping the cart.
Two Direct-Drive Front Motors
Discovery uses two brushless reversing permanent-magnet direct-drive motors mounted within the front-wheel assemblies.
Replacing the original front spindle and hub arrangement with SilverWolfโs vehicle-specific motor adapters allows the front wheels to contribute powered traction without adding a conventional transfer case, driveshaft, or front differential.
Both front motors operate together. Electronic differentiation automatically reduces the effort from the inside motor while turning, helping the cart steer naturally with the system engaged.
On a standard cart with an open rear differential, both front wheels and at least one rear wheel provide powered traction. A cart equipped with a limited-slip rear differential can provide powered traction through all four wheels.
Selectable 4 Low and 4 High Modes
Discovery gives the driver two distinct traction modes.
4 Low
Use 4L when maximum low-speed torque is needed for:
- Steep climbs
- Loose or muddy ground
- Deep grass
- Sandy terrain
- Controlled trailer movement
- Working around rural property
- Low-speed obstacle negotiation
SilverWolf states that 4L supplies maximum torque through approximately 9 mph before the front motors disengage and freewheel.
4 High
Use 4H when smoother additional traction is preferred across a somewhat broader speed range.
SilverWolf states that 4H supplies front-wheel torque through approximately 12 mph. Above the assistance range, the front motors disengage and freewheel for efficiency.
Discovery is a traction and low-speed torque system. It is not designed to increase the golf cartโs maximum speed.
More Traction for Hills and Challenging Terrain
The Discovery system gives a compatible golf cart additional pulling and climbing ability precisely where a conventional two-wheel-drive cart is most likely to struggle.
It is particularly useful for:
- Hunting properties
- Farms and rural acreage
- Campgrounds
- Lake and beach communities
- Utility work
- Muddy trails
- Sandy ground
- Wet grass
- Uneven terrain
- Steep driveways
- Recreational off-road use
The extra torque and traction do not increase the golf cartโs published gross vehicle weight rating, payload capacity, or towing rating. Never exceed the vehicle manufacturerโs loading or towing limits.
Front Regenerative and Anti-Lock Braking
The powered front motors also contribute regenerative braking and front-wheel anti-lock braking functionality.
Regenerative braking converts some of the cartโs kinetic energy back into electrical energy during deceleration. Front-wheel braking assistance can also improve braking control compared with carts that rely primarily on rear drum brakes.
These features supplement the golf cartโs original braking system. They do not eliminate the need to maintain the factory brakes or operate at a speed appropriate for the terrain, passengers, cargo, and weather conditions.
SilverWolf Smartphone App
The included Golf Cart Module communicates with the SilverWolf smartphone app.
Depending on the system configuration and software version, the app provides access to information such as:
- Vehicle speed
- Battery level
- System power
- Motor and controller status
- Operating settings
- System diagnostics
The SilverWolf app is required during system setup. Download and register the app before beginning installation.
Phone compatibility, app functions, and software availability may change as SilverWolf updates the platform.
Fully Enclosed Front Motors
SilverWolf describes the Discovery front motors as fully enclosed and waterproof for operation through wet, muddy environments, shallow streams, and puddles.
The system should never be treated as suitable for indefinite submersion.
SilverWolf instructs owners not to leave the motors submerged for more than 30 minutes and to park the cart in a dry, open area after wet use. The motor controllers and other electrical components must remain dry and should never be submerged or cleaned with a direct pressure-washer stream.

The installer must read and follow the complete application-specific SilverWolf manual.
Although an experienced technician or highly capable DIY installer may complete the work with standard hand tools, a jack, jack stands, insulated electrical tools, and proper safety equipment, professional installation is strongly recommended when the customer is not comfortable working around high-current battery systems, suspension components, and wheel hubs.
Important Safety Information
The Discovery kit increases low-speed torque and available traction. Drivers must allow time to become familiar with the cartโs changed handling characteristics.
SilverWolf warns operators to:
- Keep speeds appropriate for the terrain
- Avoid abrupt acceleration while turning
- Keep both hands on the steering wheel
- Reduce speed while carrying passengers or cargo
- Allow additional room for stopping and turning while towing
- Travel straight up and down hills
- Avoid operating on slopes greater than 15 degrees
- Inspect shallow-water crossings before entering
- Avoid sudden drop-offs, large rocks, and slippery surfaces
- Never exceed the original vehicleโs payload, towing, or GVWR limits
- Keep electrical controllers and connections dry
- Never lift a motor by its power cable
- Never use impact tools on the motor bolts or wheel lug nuts
The motor kit does not turn a golf cart into a road-certified passenger vehicle, utility vehicle, or unrestricted all-terrain vehicle.
Why Buy From Peteโs Golf Carts?
The most important part of purchasing a Discovery kit is determining whether the cart actually qualifies for installation.
Peteโs Golf Carts can help review the cartโs model, year, voltage, controller, motor type, throttle, suspension, lift kit, battery, solenoid, wheels, and tires before the order is placed.
Providing photographs of the cart, controller label, motor label, front suspension, lift kit, battery label, solenoid, wheels, and tires can help identify compatibility issues before installation begins.
A careful pre-purchase review can prevent ordering the wrong application or discovering that the cart requires additional components after the kit arrives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Discovery Kit Make My Golf Cart Four-Wheel Drive?
The system powers both front wheels while retaining the original rear drivetrain. With a conventional open rear differential, both front wheels and at least one rear wheel provide driven traction. A cart with a limited-slip rear differential can provide powered traction through all four wheels.
Will It Make My Golf Cart Faster?
No. Discovery is intended to add low-speed torque and traction rather than increase maximum vehicle speed.
SilverWolf states that the front motors assist through approximately 9 mph in 4L and 12 mph in 4H. They then disengage and freewheel.
Can I Engage 4WD While Moving?
Yes. SilverWolf states that the driver can engage or disengage the system using the dash switch without stopping the cart.
Does It Work in Reverse?
Yes. Both 4L and 4H operate in forward and reverse.
Can I Leave the System Engaged?
SilverWolf states that the system may remain engaged. The front motors automatically disengage and freewheel above their programmed assistance range.
Can I Install It on a Gas Golf Cart?
No. Discovery is designed for qualifying electric golf carts only.
Does It Work With Lithium Batteries?
Yes, when the lithium battery and battery management system meet SilverWolfโs voltage and current requirements.

No. Required supporting components such as the Club Car lift kit, compatible wheels, tires, battery, and heavy-duty solenoid are separate unless explicitly included in a Peteโs Golf Carts bundle.
Will It Affect Driving Range?
SilverWolf states that the system has no measurable range effect when turned off. When operating, actual range will depend on terrain, vehicle load, battery condition, tire size, driving style, and how frequently the front motors are engaged.
Regenerative braking can recover some energy during deceleration, but no specific range increase should be guaranteed for an individual cart.
Can the Motors Get Wet?
The front motors are enclosed for wet and muddy conditions, but they should not remain submerged for more than 30 minutes. Motor controllers and other electrical components must not be submerged or pressure washed.
Can I Tow More Weight After Installing It?
No. Discovery adds traction and low-speed pulling power, but it does not increase the vehicle manufacturerโs towing rating, payload capacity, or GVWR.
Is Professional Installation Required?
SilverWolf presents the kit as suitable for qualified DIY or dealer installation, but it requires mechanical, suspension, electrical, alignment, and app-configuration work.
Professional installation is strongly recommended unless the installer has the proper tools, knowledge, and experience.
