Description

Replacement Ignitor for Non-EFI Yamaha Gas Golf Carts

This listing is for a replacement ignitor for select Yamaha gas-powered golf carts equipped with a non-EFI ignition system.

Depending on the supplier or catalog, this component may also be described as an ignition coil, ignitor coil, ignition module or TCI ignition assembly. Our current product designation is ignitor, while discontinued part number ENG-114 was commonly marketed as an ignition coil.

This replacement covers Yamaha applications ranging from the G-Series through first-generation Drive and early Drive2 gas carts. Because Yamaha used different ignition systems across model years and fuel-system configurations, confirm the cart model, model year, non-EFI configuration and OEM number before ordering.

Confirmed Fitment

Yamaha Model Power Model Years
G11 Gas Year Range not Specified
G16 Gas 1996-2002
G20 Gas 2000-2002
G21 Gas 2001-2004
G22 Gas 2003-2007
G29 / Drive Gas 2007-2016
Drive2 Gas 2017-2019

All applications must be non-EFI.

Important Non-EFI Requirement

This ignitor is not intended for fuel-injected Yamaha gas carts.

Before ordering, verify:

  • The golf cart is gas powered
  • The cart uses a non-EFI fuel and ignition system
  • The model and model year fall within the published application
  • The original component or service information references a matching OEM number
  • The electrical connectors and physical configuration match the existing component

Yamaha Drive and Drive2 carts were manufactured with different engine and fuel-system configurations. Do not order solely by the โ€œDriveโ€ or โ€œDrive2โ€ name.

Resistor Spark Plug Required

A compatible resistor-type spark plug is required for proper operation with this ignitor.

Using an incorrect non-resistor spark plug may contribute to:

  • Failure to start
  • Rough idling
  • Misfiring
  • Backfiring
  • Abnormal combustion
  • Possible damage to the ignitor

Always use the correct resistor spark plug specified for the cartโ€™s engine and model year.

The spark plug is not included with this product.

Possible Symptoms of an Ignition-System Problem

A failing ignitor may be associated with symptoms such as:

  • No-start condition
  • Weak or intermittent spark
  • Engine misfire
  • Rough running
  • Backfiring
  • Engine stopping after warming up
  • Intermittent loss of ignition

These symptoms can also be caused by a spark plug, plug cap, wiring connection, ground, ignition coil, pulsar, fuel-system problem or other engine component. Proper diagnosis is strongly recommended before replacing an electrical ignition part.

Installation and Diagnostic Notes

Ignition-system diagnosis and installation should be completed by a qualified golf-cart technician or someone familiar with Yamaha gas-engine electrical systems.

Before installation:

  • Disconnect the battery according to Yamaha service procedures
  • Allow the engine and exhaust components to cool
  • Confirm the cart is a compatible non-EFI gas model
  • Compare the replacement unit with the original component
  • Photograph the original wire routing and connections
  • Inspect connectors, grounds and wiring for corrosion or damage
  • Confirm the correct resistor spark plug is installed
  • Follow the applicable Yamaha service manual
  • Set any required component clearance or air gap to Yamaha specifications

Do not guess at an air-gap measurement or splice incompatible electrical connectors. After installation, secure all wiring away from moving parts, hot engine surfaces and sharp edges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nivel 5911 the replacement for RedHawk ENG-114?

Yes. Nivel lists ENG-114 as a cross-reference for item 5911. Since ENG-114 has been discontinued by RedHawk, use 5911 as the active SKU.

Is this an ignitor or an ignition coil?

Nivel currently describes 5911 as an ignitor. Older catalogs and sellers may call the same cross-referenced assembly an ignition coil, ignitor coil or TCI assembly. โ€œIgnitorโ€ should be the primary product term, with the other names retained for search and cross-reference purposes.

Does it fit fuel-injected Yamaha carts?

No. Nivel specifies this part for non-EFI applications.

Does it fit a Yamaha G29/Drive?

It fits Nivelโ€™s specified 2007-2016 Yamaha G29/Drive gas applications that use a non-EFI ignition system. Confirm the cartโ€™s fuel system and OEM number before ordering.

Does it fit every Yamaha Drive2?

No. Nivel publishes Drive2 gas fitment for 2017-2019 non-EFI applications. Do not assume compatibility with later model years or EFI carts.

Does it fit a Yamaha G11?

Nivel includes the Yamaha G11 gas cart in its product description but does not provide a G11 model-year range in the published specification table. Confirm the original OEM number and component configuration before ordering.

Is a spark plug included?

No. A spark plug is not identified as included.

Do I need a resistor spark plug?

Yes. The legacy ENG-114 instructions identify a resistor-type spark plug as required for proper operation with this ignitor.

Will replacing the ignitor fix a no-start condition?

Only if the ignitor is the failed component. No-start and weak-spark symptoms can also be caused by wiring, grounds, switches, the spark plug, plug cap, ignition coil, pulsar, fuel system or other engine components. Diagnose the system before ordering.
